DXER ham radio news

I drove 440 miles yesterday in snow squalls, rain, and ice. That made the roundtrip a couple hours longer than it should have been. I had more than enough time to catch up on the queue of podcasts I had stacked up, and even finished the last few hours of one audio book.

Most of my podcast backlog was of the ham radio variety. There are plenty of ham radio related podcasts to choose from, and nearly all of them have good production quality. Some are interesting, others not so much. But I’m still left to wonder — where are the facet specific programs?

There are no DX specific programs. There are no programs for radiosport enthusiasts. None for digital or packet enthusiasts. There are no specific programs for emergency responders, paper chasers, county hunters, ragchewers, QRPers, CW enthusiasts, antenna experimenters, weak signal operators or even satellite hunters.

This seems odd to me given that any of the segments of the hobby mentioned are hugely popular with potential audiences of thousands or even tens of thousands listeners.

Instead, there are about a dozen general discussion programs. It’s as though the only people willing to produce a podcast aren’t experts at anything in particular, but who prefer to cover general news, the occasional rumor, and stories about how “Bob” got started in ham radio.

Ours is a technical hobby and many of its facets come with some degree of difficulty. Having a subject matter expert pontificate on how to get started with amateur satellites, how to setup an EME station, or how to bust a pile-up would surely be appreciated.

Don’t you think?

Today, January 18th, New Technical Requirements has been published from Bulgarian Ministry of Communication.

Thanks to the great commitment of BFRA now Bulgarian Amateurs have obtained some important changes :

 — Removed the age limit for the acquisition of Class 2 liccense (VHF and UHF with a power of not more than 5 watts, and HF from a club radio station).

 — Established 14 years old as age limit to obtain Class A license (All bands with full legal power)

 — Removed the mandatory 6-month period between the Class 22 and Class 1 exams.

 — Significant increase in the power allowed in most bands : Max output power is now 1000 Watt (in stationary mode) and 1500 Watt allowed when participating in international contests.

 And other minor changes.

DXER ham radio news

Well …… not right now; but it will be.
>
We’ve had some snow showers this morning, which have not amounted to much more than a nuisance as I had to deal with a bunch of idiot drivers this morning on the commute into work. The BAD weather is supposed to hit tomorrow afternoon into Sunday morning.

It doesn’t sound as bad as it may end up, as only 3 to 6 inches (7.5–15 cm) of snow are forecast, with that even changing to rain Sunday afternoon. The tricky part is that as the precipitation ends, and the front moves through, the temperatures are supposed to drop faster than the proverbial lead balloon. By Sunday evening, we will drop from the upper 30s F (3–4 C) to a low of around 4F (-15 C) or thereabouts. That means all that moisture on the ground is going to flash freeze before it has a chance to evaporate. Come Monday morning, the roads and sidewalks will probably be pretty treacherous.

The company that I work for does not take off for Martin Luther King’s Birthday. However, the company that I work at DOES close the building for Monday, so I have to burn a vacation day. With how busy things have been at work, I am not disappointed!

I have no pressing plans for the weekend, except for getting on the air and melting some solder. First time in a long time that I may actually get to enjoy these activities!

Actually, that’s not totally true — I cannot tell a lie. I did get on 80 Meters last night for the Thursday Night 80 Meter QRP Fox Hunt. I did bag two pelts last night; but I have to tell you ….. every ttime I think I have a handle on propagation, it kicks my butt.

Both Foxes were in Georgia — John K4BAI and Jim N4TMM. They’re not all that far from each other. I mean, with regard to how far both are from NJ, they’re basically in the same neighborhood. Jim N4TMM was 579 for pretty much most of the night. So…… you would think — th the two of them being in the same state and all — K4BAI should be somewhere around 579, also — right?

No, silly rabbit! John was 559 AT BEST and the QSB on him was horrendous. One second he was there, next second, poof! I managed to make contact with him towards the end of the hunt. It was a struggle, but John’s more-than-excellent ears got me into his logbook. Indeed, a testimony to him and his operating prowess — not mine in the least.

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Mangosman, who notes:

There is a new digital receiver available. It can receive DRM in all bands from low, medium, high and band 1 & 2 VHF, as well as DAB+ and analog AM and FM.

It cannot receive HD radio because Xpedia charge licensing fees on every receiver and the market is restricted to USA and Mexico.

https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/DRM-DAB-Digital-Radio-Receiver_11547499.html

Thank you for the tip! It appears this receiver is a product of STARWAVES GmbH, Germany/Switzerland, although I assume it’s manufactured in China based on the bulk order costs.

I’ve reached out to the manufacturer for more details as there are few specifics and no specifications on the Alibaba page.

There are also no details about this radio on the Starwaves website.

If/when we receive more information about this radio, we’ll share it here on the SWLing Post. Stay tuned!

“Hello Operators

Extreme weather and grid down disasters seem to be happening more often, and with greater intensity. More often than not, when we organize off grid emergency communications training with our portable radio gear, it usually takes place in fair weather conditions. What about training for a winter snow storms, the aftermath of a hurricane or tornado..?
Training in fair weather is an easy way to become overconfident about our actual level of communications preparedness.

Enter the Winter Field Day Association.

Each year the Winter Field Day Association puts on a Ham Radio event called “Winter Field Day”. The event is designed to motivate amateur radio operators to get out in the field, in conditions which are less than ideal.

This video is my take on how we can use Winter Field day, to develop or enhance our communications skills, in conditions most operators shy away from.

DXER ham radio news

OO-391kHz — Oshawa, Ontario courtesy: VE3GOP

This coming weekend will see another monthly CLE challenge. This time the hunting grounds will be 385.0–399.9 kHz.

For those unfamiliar with this monthly activity, a ’CLE’ is a ’Co-ordinated Listening Event’, as NDB DXers around the world focus their listening time on one small slice of the NDB spectrum.

A wonderful challenge for listeners in North America is to hear little OO — 391kHz, located in Oshawa, Ontario. It puts out only 7 ½ watts but has been logged on both coasts as well as in Europe! Listen for its USB CW identifier (with your receiver in the CW mode) on 391.396 and its LSB ID on 390.595 kHz.

MF propagation this past week has been good and signals in this frequency range should be propagating well if things stay undisturbed for the weekend. As usual however, a large coronal hole has returned to its monthly CLE position and its weekend effects are still unknown.

When tuning for NDBs, put your receiver in the CW mode and listen for the NDB’s CW identifier, repeated every few seconds. Listen for U.S. NDB identifiers approximately 1 kHz higher or lower than the published transmitted frequency since these beacons are modulated with a 1020Hz tone approximately.

For example, ’AA’ near Fargo, ND, transmits on 365 kHz and its upper sideband CW identifier is tuned at 366.025 kHz while its lower sideband CW ident can be tuned at 363.946 kHz. Its USB tone is actually 1025 Hz while its LSB tone is 1054 Hz.

Often, one sideband will be much stronger than the other so if you don’t hear the first one, try listening on the other sideband.

Canadian NDBs normally have an USB tone only, usually very close to 400 Hz. They also have a long dash (keydown) following the CW identifier.

All NDBs heard in North America will be listed in the RNA database (updated daily) while those heard in Europe may be found in the REU database. Beacons heard outside of these regions will be found in the RWW database.

From CLE organizer Brian Keyte, G3SIA, come details via the The NDB List Group:

Hello all,

Our 240th Coordinated Listening Event is less than a week away.
We can now forget all about pyramids and relax with a straightforward
event. Whether you are a keen propagation watcher or just a
take-what-comes listener, please join in.

Days: Friday 25 January — Monday 28 January
Times: Start and end at midday, your LOCAL TIME
Range: 385.0–399.9 kHz

Please log all the NDBs you can identify that are listed in that range
(it includes 385 kHz but not 400 kHz) plus any UNIDs you find there.
We last used this frequency range for CLE224 in October 2017.

Please send your final log to the List (no attachments and ideally
in a plain text email) with ‘FINAL CLE240’ in its title.
Show on each line:

# The Date (e.g. ‘2019–01–26’ etc. or just ‘26’ )
# The Time in UTC (the day changes at 00:00 UTC).
# kHz — the nominal published frequency, if known.
# The Call Ident.

Please show those main items FIRST. Other optional details such
as Location and Distance go LATER in the same line.
As always, of course, tell us your own location and brief details
of the equipment that you were using during the Event.

We will send the usual ‘Any More Logs?’ email at about 18:00 UTC
on Tuesday so that you can check that your log has been found OK.

The combined results should then be completed within a day or two.

You can soon find full details about current and past CLEs from the CLE page
http://www.ndblist.info/cle.htm It includes access to CLE240 seeklists
for your part of the World, prepared from the previous loggings in Rxx.

Good listening — enjoy the CLE.
Brian and Joachim

From: Brian Keyte G3SIA ndbcle’at’gmail.com
Location: Surrey, SE England (CLE coordinator)

(If you would like to listen remotely you could use any one remote
receiver for your loggings, stating its location and owner and with their
permission if required. A remote listener may NOT also use another
receiver, local or remote, to make further loggings for the same CLE)

These listening events serve several purposes. They:

  • determine, worldwide, which beacons are actually in service and on-the-air so the online database can be kept up-to-date
  • determine, worldwide, which beacons are out-of-service or have gone silent since the last CLE covering this range
  • will indicate the state of propagation conditions at the various participant locations
  • will give you an indication of how well your LF/MF receiving system is working
  • give participants a fun yet challenging activity to keep their listening skills honed

Final details can be found at the NDB List website, and worldwide results, for every participant, will be posted there a few days after the event.

The NDB List Group is a great place to learn more about the ‘Art of NDB DXing’ or to meet other listeners in your region. There is a lot of good information available there and new members are always very welcome. As well, you can follow the results of other CLE participants from night to night as propagation is always an active topic of discussion.

You need not be an NDB List member to participate in the CLEs and all reports, no matter how small, are of much value to the organizers.

Remember — ‘First-time’ logs are always VERY welcome!

Reports may be sent to the NDB List Group or e-mailed to CLE co-ordinator, Brian Keyte (G3SIA), whose address appears above. If you are a member of the group, all final results will also be e-mailed and posted there.

Please … give the CLE a try … then let us know what NDBâDB’s can be heard from your location! Your report can then be added to the worldwide database to help keep it up-to-date.

Have fun and good hunting!
